Cable question

May I ask a question, please?

My cable TV reception is not very good. The "cable guy" came out to
look over the situation. He said, among other things, that the cable
is painted (to match the wall it runs over) and there is a
tape-wrapped splice.

He thinks I wrapped the cable ends together and taped them. No way!
there is a coax butt connector with some tape to keep the rain out.
Used to be an outside splitter there.

I never heard of paint on the outside of the cable affecting the
signal on the inside. Is this guy BSing me or should I pay to get a
new cable installed from the utility pole to the splitter in the
basement?

Thanks, your opinion does count.

The cable guy found a way of getting out of replacing the whole drop cable
from the pole to the house. No, paint will not hurt the outside jacket of
the cable. It would probably give the cable jacket more protection.

Maybe the cable guy was afraid that once you tear the cable off the outside
wall that will leave a mark. Running a new cable over the mark area would be
less obvious. You can always paint over it after the reinstall is done.

Tape-wrapped splices, if exposed on the outside could cause problems. Water
can get into wrapped splices, causing corrosion to the fittings and sections
of the cable. If they came to replace the cable, watch and see if they use
the proper weatherproofing and have the connections tucked-up under the eve
of the house if possible.
