After reading through all the posts...
I have learned a great deal, but my question is...
Where would a person purchase these boxes & what would one expect to pay.
I hate renting equipment from the company because the price of the service is
pricy enough.
Thanks in advance...

The thing is, your peovider probably will not authorise a box you get
from anywhere (I doesn't hurt to ask). If your provider has a box
purchase program, you can buy the boxes at local electronic retailers
and their office.

Not to sound dumb, but what is meant by
"authorise a box you get"?
will they not let me use it, or will they not program the box to work.
Thank you for your response.

The cable company will only authorize (send a signal to turn it on) a box if
it's obtained through approved sources. There are many stolen boxes being
sold on eBay and elsewhere that the company will not authorize for use in
their system. If they will allow customer owned boxes to be used on their
system they will be available from the cable company or a local electronics
store such as Best Buy or Circuit City.

So, am I correct to assume, that if I purchase a box from an outside source, it
will not work on their system? Or will it work, but without the premiums?
Thanks again...

I've seen a few people report that they will work on some of the basic
channels, mostly the ones you don't need a box for. It's unlikely they would
work on any digital channels without authorizing signals from the cable
company. The boxes we work with here won't tune in any channels at all until
they've been addressed by the computer.

It means cable company will have nothing to do with it. It depends on
the status of the box from where you got it, so if it has beed
de-activated, it will probably be no more than an analog tuner.

So, what if I wanted to get a box , would there be a way to modify the box to
authorize using a chip or other means of modification.
I have seen deals that scew onto the back of the unit to prevent signals from
turning off a channel once it has been turned on from the company?
It would be real interesting to see what becomes of this posting, even though I
am only seeking knowledge of these digital systems...

A: No, B: if they existed and were viable, you would be stealing cable
programming.

They don't work that way. All they do is block the return path, and
with that, the provider can still manipulate the box.
