Getting TIVO to use Cable Box Serial port
(too old to reply)

I know nothing about digital cable except that I have it, Tele - Media (now
Adelphia I think) in South Florida. I have a Motorolla 2000 cable box that
has the serial port on back but when I hook up my Tivo, it can't change the
channels. I hate the IR changer since it never works quite right, does
anyone know if there is a setting I can change to allow my Tivo to switch
channels through the serial port?

You need to call your cable company. They have to configure their equipment
that controls the boxes so that the port is enabled for use with Tivo.

As a follow up:
I called Adelphia (It was Tele - Media just last week) and they told me that
all their Motorolla 2000 boxes should be able to use the Serial port. They
said they would have had to order the boxes without serial port turned on
for it not to work. I tried it again and it worked perfectly, that IR crap
sucks, use the serial port if at all possible, otherwise when you think you
are recording Bourne Identity you might get Rugrats if your kids were
watching Nick and the IR didn't get the channel change completed. Thanks
again for your help.
