Dear CB,
The electronics are wrong. you can hook a splitter up backwards but one leg
is going to suffer terribly. They're full of diodes which only allow one way
passage of current/signal.
Re examine your signal loss at each splitter leg. The 2 ways are easy,, you
lose 3.5 db of signal off each leg. Bigger splits get trickier, a 3 way may
have 2 x 7.5 loss and one with a 3.5 loss. That's the "hot leg" you want
headed downstream to all your stuff. You may even find some balanced 4 ways
that lose 5.5 on each leg.
I am a cable guy and can only speak to that, so there's no way to tell how a
distribution amp may effect the telephony, but the position of the amp is a
big consideration. You want more signal to the whole of the house put it
right where it enters the home. If signal begins to poop out up stairs, find
that split and put the amp there.
9 splits, unless done my the homeowner (no offense inferred) is inexcusable.
I would have assisted the technician rewire it correctly, repair any damage,
and then fired him on the spot.
The amp markings mean- frequency range is from 52 megahertz (channel 2) to
1000mhz (which is probably where all the music channels are located, being
too much signal loss at that high a frequency to add video) and the level of
signal boost is 15 db (just an electronic measurement of signal and more is
not always better. Typically best (analog) pix come in at 0 - +10 db at the
back of the TV) That's frequency range (52mhz-1000mhz) the amp expects the
CatV provider to be sending to it, and 15db the boost in signal the amp
provides.
The Catv company expects to get back (from your box) frequencies from 5mhz
to 42 mhz, with a reduction of 1 db out of the amp coming to them.
Don't bother opening the potmetal circles, they are casting marks with
nothing but PC board and goop behind them.
You can wrap amps around your house like Xmas lights if you want to, but
channels begin to blend together (crossmodulation), you pull in every
strange signal from anyplace, and sooner or later the cable company (more
likely the FCC) will pull your plug, especially when the local airport
pilots complain about getting "I love Lucy" in their headsets when trying to
land their 747's. All it takes to find the house is one complaint and a
quick helicopter ride.
Good Luck--og

Post by C***@webtv.netI have Optima online which does my phone cable and internet.I count 9
splits in the cable coming in.I went to add another Tv with box and I
can't get the box to work unless I run it direct. If I split it at that
point I can only go to the new tv direct I cannot use the box? The
amplier the cable company out in is an antronix with these descriptions
fwd52-1000mh +15db
reverse5-42mh -1db
This amplifier has a power input and 2 cables going out. There are more
dead connector but they are solid metal and I don't know if it's
possible to drill them open or if there is anything in there to connect
to if I do.What option do I have getting another amplifier to put inline
at the new tv split so both tv's work on that line? Thanks ahead of
time.
